Study of water supply – yield relationships in mature date palms
This large-scale field experiment involves 100 adult date palms, belonging to five different cultivars. A weather based automatic irrigation scheduling and control system is used to supply the palms with water via a pressure compensated water distribution system. Sensors installed beneath the palms provide a three dimensional image of soil moisture and water potential over time. Data acquired will be used to establish a mathematical model that expresses how the performance of the date palms is related with the climate and the irrigation water supply. Such a model could help saving large amounts of irrigation water in date production across the UAE.
